As a journeyman painter I have used just about every product under the sun and consider myself to be among one the top painting professionals in the country. So I purchased Rustoleum’s dry erase paint with high hopes of functionality, ease of use, etc. I installed the material flawlessly to specification applied multiple coats, and much to my dismay the product is a complete failure. I cannot get any color marker to wipe completely off, it ghosts badly and simply doesn’t work. To sum up my experience, it was a complete waste of time & money.

Not giving up on this project I did some research and came across 2 products: Remarkable & Idea Paint. I purchased both products to conduct my own comparison and here’s what I came up with. Remarkable was about 25% more cost effective, the ease of use was phenomenal, the smell is basically odorless, it’s water soluble and it laid down very smoothly. I applied just one medium coat and waited the 48hrs for it to cure as instructed before writing on it. The functionality is perfect and this is exactly what I was looking for.

Idea Paint was more expensive and much, much harder to apply. I didn’t care for the odor at all! The product thickens, activates quickly and if you don’t know how to paint I just can’t see someone getting a truly professional result. The thing that really bothered me with the product as opposed to Remarkable was that it had zero self leveling properties which left quite a lot of texture or orange peel in the dried finish. The other down side is Idea paint wants you to wait 7 Days! before you can write on it… It did work well when I used it, but the overall look and feel was nowhere near the same result I had with Remarkable. Also, when I called Idea’s customer service it was very hard to get help and when I did they were not that enthused to help, instead they tried to down their competitor and told me not to use Remarkable because it’s a crafty art product?!?! and was not commercial grade. That really put a bad taste in my mouth with the Idea Paint guys! I have to say that if any product is a commercial grade product its certainly not Idea Paint but Remarkable.

The overall grade I would give each product…

    Rustoleum Dry Erase Paint: F-

    Remarkable Dry Erase Paint: A+

    Idea Paint: C

Hope this helps save you the time and energy I wasted…I bought the Remarkable at: remarkablecoating.com. Thank you Remarkable!!!
